San Antonio Review (SAR) is an international journal of literature, art and ideas devoted to nurturing creative expression and fostering dialogue across boundaries. Founded in San Antonio, Texas, in 2017, SAR began as a small seed: a belief that an alternative publishing space—outside of academia, commercial markets and governmental influence—could serve as fertile ground for cultivating diverse voices and collective imagination. Today, it continues to grow as an open, inclusive gathering space for writers, artists, scholars, activists, students, workers and community members seeking to share their perspectives on our shared world.

At its core, San Antonio Review is committed to resisting the narrowing pressures of commodification and exclusion that too often define cultural production. We publish poetry, fiction, nonfiction, essays, reviews, visual art and theoretical explorations that challenge, illuminate and reimagine. Each piece is chosen with care, not only for its artistic or intellectual merit, but also for its capacity to spark reflection, conversation and transformation in readers. We strive to honor contributors by presenting their work in both digital and occasional print editions, ensuring accessibility while also preserving their creations for future generations.

San Antonio Review is more than a publication; it is an experiment in prefigurative politics—the practice of building institutions today that embody the values of the world we hope to see tomorrow. Our editorial collective, composed entirely of volunteers, works collaboratively and transparently, modeling the spirit of shared responsibility and mutual care. Funding comes not from advertisers or large institutions, but from donations, submission fees and the sales of print editions and related materials. This independence safeguards our editorial freedom, allowing us to prioritize integrity, experimentation and inclusivity over profit or prestige.

We view SAR as a living archive of everyday resistance and creative resilience. In publishing, we seek to provide a hospitable environment—soil in which ideas, images and words can take root and flourish. Some works may blossom quickly; others may lie dormant until rediscovered by future readers. Our hope is that each piece contributes to a broader cultural commons, one where creativity is not reduced to a commodity but respected as a vital means of human connection, meaning-making and visioning.

The editorial collective recognizes that the future is shaped not only by what we critique but also by what we build. By curating a space where multiplicity thrives—where poets and philosophers, parents and students, activists and dreamers can stand side by side—we work to show that publishing can itself be a form of constructive resistance. Every issue is a reminder that an alternative is possible, that art and thought remain powerful tools for reimagining society and that things may indeed be otherwise.

San Antonio Review is a seed. Planted, tended and shared, it grows with the contributions of those who believe in the possibility of a more generous, just and humane future. We invite readers and creators alike to join us in cultivating that vision, one word, one image, one idea at a time
